Fetterman Refuses to Answer PA Sheriffs Regarding Soft-On-Crime Policies

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. — It has been two weeks since 13 Pennsylvania Sheriffs sent a letter to John Fetterman regarding his radical policy positions on crime, law enforcement, and criminal justice reform. John Fetterman has yet to respond to the sheriffs’ letter, which included a request that John Fetterman respond within 14 days.

“As if John Fetterman’s outrageous views on decriminalizing drugs, defunding the police, and releasing convicted criminals onto our streets wasn’t enough, now John Fetterman thinks there’s no need to answer the legitimate and serious concerns of local law enforcement and constituents in Pennsylvania. John Fetterman is a danger to Pennsylvania communities, and he can’t hide from his radical past forever,” said Communications Director Brittany Yanick.

Full text of the letter:

Dear Mr. Fetterman,

We write to you in hopes of better understanding your positions on issues critical to our profession and the communities we serve. We share concerns about your previous positions pertinent to the law enforcement community and would greatly appreciate your clarification on your past comments.

On September 25, 2015, when asked about your stances on drugs, you stated that you were not only in favor of legalizing marijuana but also asserted you were for decriminalizing drugs across the board. Since your comments, drug overdoses have risen exponentially, taking the lives of nearly 92,000 Americans in 2020.

On July 8, 2020, you explained that you favored removing equipment from our police officers and believed the police force should be demilitarized to de-escalate tensions between rioters and police officers. Our officers do not show up with protective gear to de-escalate situations; rather, they show up to already escalated situations and must have equipment that will protect them.

On July 20, 2020, you said you promoted releasing one-third of Pennsylvania inmates and believed that it would not make anyone less safe. Additionally, on June 1, 2021, you expressed that you favor lightening  sentences for murderers. We believe such measures would add to already rising crime rates in Pennsylvania, particularly in Philadelphia.

In September 2020, you criticized a judge for setting bail too high after police arrested rioters for vandalizing businesses, setting fires, and damaging a police station.

Lastly, on May 17, 2021, you endorsed Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. Under Krasner’s Watch, between 2019 and 2020, the number of homicides in Philadelphia rose 40 percent.

Will you reverse your past positions on all of these issues? We would greatly appreciate your clarification on how your policies would keep our communities safer. This race is crucial for our community as crime continues to skyrocket and progressively continue to plague our streets. We respectfully request your reply within 14 days of receipt of this letter.
